Field Trip

So as the editor of Perfect Bound Magazine, I thought it would be a great idea to actually take the time to visit the office of one of the leading magazines in Canada, none other than Canadian Living. Executive editor of the magazine, Doug O'Neill, was kind enough to give me a grand tour of the place along with another member of the Perfect Bound team. I saw the test kitchen where all of the wonderful recipes that appear so temptingly in the magazine are created. But because it was 3 days before Christmas and the staff had left early, all the food was gone. Too bad.

The walls were empty-- no little post-it notes, nothing. I was curious about this so I asked. I was told that if I saw any hints of what will be inside future issues, I would be hunted down. Fair enough.

Canadian Living consists of a very large team of writers, editors, art directors, copy editors and the like who work hard to put together such a successful magazine.

The office is situated at the corner of Sheppard and Yonge. I found that even the exterior is shrouded in secrecy.

So why didn't I get a picture from the inside? Because I didn't bring a camera and I probably wouldn't be allowed to take pictures anyway.

Doug teaches Editing Service Journalism at Ryerson, just one of the courses offered in the Magazine Publishing Certificate. I highly recommend it.
